Discover Burmese Refugees: Letters from the Thai-Burma Border by T.F. Rhoden. Start reading today and explore ideas, insights, and experiences that stay with you.

Overview: The misrule of the Burmese military junta continues to be the main catalyst of refugees in Southeast Asia today. In this collection of letters, learn about the true stories of people who have fled from that regime. All of the accounts are written by the refugees themselves and explain how they became asylum seekers, what life is like in the camps, and what they envision for their future. These stories document persons from the 8888 generation, the 2007 Saffron Revolution, and various ethnic struggles. This book contains the narratives of thirty one diverse individuals—all of them united by the simple desire to have a more representative government in their homeland.Reviewed by Pascal Khoo-Thwe, author of From the Land of Green Ghosts: A Burmese Odyssey:"Burmese Refugees is a collection of short, moving autobiographical essays written by Burmese refugees living in camps situated along the Thai-Burma border. The book consists of 31 essays, along with a concise history of the country, introductory notes to three sections the essays are divided into: 8888 Uprising, 2007 Uprising, Ethnic Strife and comments on or footnotes to each essay. The complicated nature of Burmese politics and ethnic makeup means that it has never been easy to describe Burma accurately or fully in one book. But the diversity also offers many colorful and unique pictures with scintillating nuances to many scholars and observers alike who want to go beyond the political norm and clichés.Burmese Refugees is an invaluable and rare book that faithfully records the complexities and subtleties in the often depressing and hopeless situations of Burmese refugees who live in political limbo, and often forgot or ignored by the outside world until bad things happen to them. It manages to string together episodes of the lives of the refugees in a compact form without sensationalizing them, with excellent editing and deep understanding of the issues of the country. The comments at the end of each essay serve as important frames or strings to hold individual stories and link them together like a string of pearls. Far from being judgmental or patronizing, they help the reader understand the wider context of each case.It is refreshing to read a book about Burma that registers and elucidates the pains, the sorrows and the aspirations of the characters with equal measures through empathy, fairness and an eye for significant details often overlooked by the characters themselves.A matter of fact descriptions by the characters about their lives and the even-handedness of the editors make the ‘mundane’ stories more alluring, vivid and thought-provoking as they only ask understanding from the readers through their often desperate, naïve, hopeful voices, but still retaining their dignity."Benedict Rogers, author of Than Shwe, Unmasking Burma's Tyrant and A Land Without Evil:"This inspiring book draws together the real-life, genuine, first-hand stories of refugees from Burma, in a way that describes why and how they fled Burma, their daily struggles in exile, and their hopes for the future. It is pointedly not sensationalist, but is instead painfully true and real. I hope that readers will be motivated not only to feel sympathy, but to turn that into action."Ashley South, author of Ethnic Politics in Burma:"Testimony to the struggle and suffering, and enduring hopes, among the refugee population along the Thailand-Burma border.”Michael Fruct, former Education Coordinator for Jesuit Refugee Service in Mae Hong Son, Thailand: "Better than any other current publication I've read, this title paints an accurate portrayal of what life is like in the refugee camps inside Thailand. The book's strongest point is that the editors let the Burmese refugees speak for themselves.”

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Worth the time and money.

Good, but not quite perfect. The middle dragged a tiny bit, but the ending totally made up for it. Still a good book.

An average read for me. It felt a bit repetitive in the middle. Could have been shorter. Just right down the middle.

I have mixed feelings about this one. It had some good moments, but the overall plot felt a bit disjointed in the second half. Probably won't read it again, but it was an okay way to pass the time.

Not bad, but not my favorite. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. A generous 3 stars.
