Overview: Le pli a toujours existé dans les arts ; mais le propre du Baroque est de porter le pli à l’infini. Si la philosophie de Leibniz est baroque par excellence, c’est parce que tout se plie, se déplie, se replie. Sa thèse la plus célèbre est celle de l’âme comme “ monade ” sans porte ni fenêtre, qui tire d’un sombre fond toutes ses perceptions claires : elle ne peut se confondre que par analogie avec l’intérieur d’une chapelle baroque, de marbre noir, où la lumière n’arrive que par des ouvertures imperceptibles à l’observateur du dedans ; aussi l’âme est-elle pleine de plis obscurs. Pour découvrir un néo-baroque moderne, il suffit de suivre l’histoire du pli infini dans tous les arts : “ pli selon pli ”, avec la poésie de Mallarmé et le roman de Proust, mais aussi l’œuvre de Michaux, la musique de Boulez, la peinture de Hantaï. Et ce néo-leibnizianisme n’a cessé d’inspirer la philosophie.“ Qu’est-ce que ça veut dire, le tissu de l’âme ? ” ; ainsi commence ce cours, des années 1986-1987 consacrées à Leibniz. Pour illustrer cette question, Gilles Deleuze prend un exemple très simple, très concret, extrait du livre II des Nouveaux Essais sur l’Entendement : Je travaille, mais j’ai envie d’aller à la taverne. Et, pour faire comprendre ce dilemme de l’acte livre, Deleuze se sert d’une extraordinaire théorie de G. W. Leibniz sur la damnation. Ici les surprises philosophiques se suivent et s’enchaînent. Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. I got really invested in the main character's journey. Everything just clicked for me. Glad I picked this up.

A very satisfying read. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. A solid 5/5 for me.

It was okay. It felt a bit repetitive in the middle. Could have been shorter. Might work better for someone else, just wasn't completely for me.
