Overview: Twee soldaten uit het Amerikaanse leger in Duitsland doen een verbluffende een onverwachte aardverschuiving heeft de ingang van een onbekende betonbunker blootgelegd. Die blijkt volgepakt te zitten met kostbare antieke schilderijen die tijdens de oorlog uit Italië verdwenen zijn. De twee soldaten besluiten enkele van die schilderijen naar Holland te smokkelen, om ze in Amsterdam van de hand te doen. Dat lukt. Ze doen dat nog een tweede keer en hadden nog heel lang zo door kunnen gaan, ware het niet dat ze enkele van de kunstvoorwerpen naar de VS smokkelen op een van de vrachtschepen van de Roos-rederij.Het komt Pa Roos ter ore dat er iets op zijn schepen gebeurt, en hij stuurt er zijn zoon Arie plus Jan Prins en Bob Evers op af om de bende op te rollen. Het complot in Amsterdam is vrij snel uitgezocht, maar de hoofdpersonen vluchten overhaast de grens over naar België, waar hoofdpersoon Kresse een landhuis heeft staan langs het kanaal Brussel-Antwerpen.De tweede ronde van het kunstavontuur wordt uitgevochten in het holst van een stormachtige nacht langs dat kanaal. Een nieuwe Ford wordt zonder veel omhaal in de plomp geduwd en het huis van Kresse brandt af. Met tienduizend gulden op zak, die Arie op meesterlijke wijze van Kresse heeft los gekregen, wordt de jacht voortgezet.

Such a great read. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Worth the time and money.

Not bad, but not my favorite. Some parts were interesting, while others were a bit of a slog to get through. Probably won't read it again, but it was an okay way to pass the time.
