Overview: Qual è il senso del medioevo? In che cosa gli siamo debitori? Perché studiarlo o insegnarlo? In questo breve, densissimo scritto, concepito e pubblicato come capitolo introduttivo al Manuale Donzelli di Storia medievale, e riproposto in volumetto autonomo (tradotto anche in francese e in spagnolo), uno storico insigne prova a cimentarsi con le domande più radicali. Il punto di partenza è il «luogo comune medioevo», quella deformazione prospettica che ci porta a leggere tutta una lunga fase storica come un altrove o come una premessa. Nell’altrove negativo ci sono povertà, fame, pestilenze, disordine politico, soperchierie dei latifondisti sui contadini, superstizioni del popolo e corruzione del clero. Nell’altrove positivo ci sono tornei e vita di corte, elfi e fate, cavalieri fedeli e principi magnanimi. Ma è altrettanto discutibile l’idea del medioevo come premessa dei secoli successivi: del capitalismo, dello Stato moderno, della borghesia.A questo medioevo del senso comune si contrappone il medioevo degli storici, che discute di articolazione dei poteri e di intersezione delle gerarchie, di signorie rurali e di egemonie urbane.Si può provare a riunificare un’idea di medioevo? Un primo passo consiste nel confrontare tutte le forme politiche del medioevo riconoscendo loro pari dignità. Ma occorre – suggerisce Sergi – un altro, e più deciso passo: valorizzare di questi mille anni di storia, i secoli centrali e la loro sperimentalità. Il medioevo è un periodo in cui non si crede fideisticamente nella ragione, ma neppure esclusivamente nel magico. Non si crede nello Stato, ma si evocano quotidianamente ideali di res publica o di Sacro Romano Impero. Si teorizza un ordine celeste che si riflette sulla terra, e si pratica il conflitto, la competizione, l’ascesa sociale. Cos’è dunque e che cosa può rappresentare per noi, il medioevo? Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. The middle dragged a tiny bit, but the ending totally made up for it. Enjoyable weekend read.

I have mixed feelings about this one. The pacing was a bit slow and I found myself skimming a few pages. It wasn't terrible, just okay. Probably won't read it again, but it was an okay way to pass the time.
